SPEARFISH SOUTH DAKOTA

We had a great stay in Spearfish but to get there we drove many miles more across looonngg Montana – Montana is a long state! And we did get into BIG SKY but the normal blue sky has been shrouded with smoke from the Canada wildfires.

A couple of things as we neared the eastern edge of Montana and stopped at a rest area.

I don’t often take photos of signs because I usually skip over them when they are posted in other people’s blog, so I think you would too. But I did find this one interesting, particularly about the dinosaurs.

I have always liked this song and of course knew only a few of the words and now here they all are. I did not know the song was originally a poem.

And as a reminder that we are still in snake country. Not to worry, I will not walk anywhere but in the very middle of the sidewalk!

Driving on, we found a place that is For Sale for anyone interested in moving to Montana.

Well worn boots.

Susan remembered that I had said that if I was not into bicycling, maybe motorcycling would be another interesting way to explore around. She found this one as a possibility for me.

No Honey, more like this one…

Entering into Spearfish we were in wonder about all the traffic right in front of our campground.

Little did we know that this was the weekend for the 46th annual city festival, and this was the largest festival either of us have ever been to. By the time we got set into our campsite we had a mere 45 minutes before they closed up and packed up. Not that we are all that into festivals, but when in Rome you know…

Susan has not been fishing much, nor has she had much opportunity to do so. But we did find some fish for her at ‘one of the oldest hatcheries in the west’.

After festivaling and fishing, we went back for our bikes to take a trip on the path we had seen next to our campsite.

What a delightful path it turned out to be as it took us along the Spearfish River and into neighborhoods of Spearfish.

Riverside riding. Along here somewhere Susan stopped to talk to a young guy in waders with a fly rod as he stood next to his bike changing a fly. Nice guy and pleasant conversation.

Cartoon-like posters all along this part of the trail made a story trail. I took a photo of only this first one.

The path took us into and through many parks and the Lookout Park had interesting horse sculptures.

In one of the neighborhoods we see that the owner knows she if feeding the deer ;’-).

Bicycles.. both in the same front yard.

And so we ended this short but quite lovely bike ride back at camp for the night.

It is a fantastic campground with plenty of room for each camper, very clean and lots of trees around. The town itself, at least the parts we have seen, is welcoming, quiet and peaceful. We like this town and its very pleasant people.

  1. Nancy and Susan… you go to the most wonderful places! Are you on a solo trip or meeting up with a group?
It’s wonderful to “see” you both.

    1. Hi Nancy. We are on our own for this first week and then in between some outings. We belong to Sisters On The Fly women’s group who are a group of campers, mostly RVs small and large. They have events nationwide and are a very active group. We are heading for an event in Lanesboro MN and will arrive there tomorrow. After that event we have three more lined up on our route home. Stay tuned here and you will hear all about them. Thank you so much Nancy for your kindest words. We love you both.
