LOPEZ ISLAND

Every year our friends Shelly & Lizette travel up to Lopez for a couple of weeks vacation time. Most recent years they have invited Rainbow Riders to come join them for a weekend or week if/when they can. This year Susan and I have joined them, and for both of us there are fond, reminiscent thoughts of many the times we have been on Lopez, together or separately.

Initially there were at least 16 of us who would be camping, riding, eating and socializing together. Some ailments and threat of rain, as well as other commitments that arrived, had half the group canceling out, so now there would be 8 of us.

Shelly & Lizette of course were already here and set up at camp.

Kim and Meri arrived a couple of hours before we did and got their room at the Inn.

Susan and I rode our bikes from the ferry in Anacortes for our stay at the Lopez Islander Inn as well.

Arriving the next day would be Kristin by bike, and Maridee by sailboat.

The first 6 of us gathered for an impromptu dinner of salmon that Shelly and Lizette had procured, and side additions from everyone’s provisions. Lizette & Shelly did a great job of preparing and grilling the salmon.

Of course the threat of rain on this rain-shadow island had us all a bit perplexed about what we would do for the several days we would be here. We had, of course, brought our bikes to enjoy some riding on the idyllic island. We six got brave thoughts the night before and decided we would ride this morning and take our chances. The morning view from our window did not show heavy dark clouds, so we felt encouraged for today’s ride. So off we go and we shall see.

I will report about that sometime after the ride.

  1. I was sorry to see that you would not be coming for the gathering. Had a decent ride today and got back not long before lightning and thunder and rain off and on for the afternoon. Hoping for at least a short ride tomorrow before heading home on Wednesday. We must have past each other somewhere along the line around Sandpoint!
