STARTING 2024 SOTF SEASON

South Beach Oregon for four nights, arriving in cool but dry weather. We may get some rainy days but shouldn’t be too bad. Our first event for this ‘round’ is here at the beach for SOTF mini Jubilee, one of several scheduled across the country to celebrate 25 years of Sisters On The Fly. SOTF have recently been voted the best women’s adventure organization in the country. Coincidentally, this is our 25th event with the Sisters!

SEA SISTERS ON THE COAST AT NEWPORT OREGON for the 25th year celebration. The woman posing may be slightly younger than most of us! In fact, it could be possible that she was born on the day SOTF was founded ;’-).

Susan and I arrived a day early and relaxed around camp as no other sisters would arrive until the next day – the official start of our event. On the next day, which came about sunny but cold, we rode our bikes to the beach with Terry.

Signs are everywhere to help us find our way from the Tsunami that could hit us at any earthquake.

After a view of the bridge along Route 101 and of the beach, we ambled back to camp. A brief but lovely little bike ride.

Claudia had been to the beach to make her labyrinth which looks really cool. She was prepared by bringing her hoe for her work of art.

The following day Susan and I took off on our own for some more exploring by bike and I was able to get the photo along the spur trail from camp.

This trail took us out to the jetty and along some waterfront. We discovered the fishing pier and got a different, more up close view of that bridge.

Unbeknownst to us, there is a brewery we were to discover. We looked into and all around it, and Susan found a menu at the pub. The plan is to ride there (all of 2 miles one way) for lunch the next day.

I took this next photo to show all the things they have in this brewery building because I for one was surprised to see ‘library’ listed as one of the attractions. Tomorrow I hope to check that out.

Nearby was the aquarium but I feel I have seen many, and enough, aquariums, so was not interested in going in. Looks like a big one, and perhaps a good one though.

Our exploration ride brought us onto OSU (Oregon State University) grounds at the Fish and Wildlife Department and Marine Science Center.

We got to see the Yellow Submarine.

I don’t know if the information plaque is readable, but it tells about the exploration this sub does at the the depths of the sea. Two people can fit inside, it goes down 350 feet and can stay for up to 4 hours. I found it interesting.

From here it was time to head back to camp. We rode on highway 101 for about a mile with wide shoulders and easy riding even with some fast moving traffic. We would however, be making two stops along the route.

You have seen in the past that Susan takes me to the best of places for lunch or dinner. She was true to form for our lunch today. I am so glad they did at least have FRESH fish & chips!

Not being able to pass by these luscious cherries, we now have plenty for our larder ;’-). They taste as good as they look.

Once back at camp we got in some reading before heading off for the potluck dinner. there was certainly an abundance of food of all kinds to satisfy anyone’s palate. Table was so long and so full, I could get only part of it all in a photo.

We all enjoyed every bite.

Thus ended our most enjoyable day. The 9 mile ride proves that you don’t have to ride far or many miles to have a fun and informative time! Exploring is definitely one of Susan’s strong points, and I am always so happy when she wants to do that.

  1. Nice post. We love Newport and Depot Bay. Great fishing and crabbing, and lots of things to do if it rains. My sister and I went on a charter out of Depot Bay a few years ago and caught lots of crab and fish, which they cleaned for us. The aquarium here is very nice, good restaurants, and great whale and sea lion watching! Enjoy your trip, Kim
